Vortrag: Die faszinierenden Jäger der Nacht

NABEAR Naturschutz-Bildungshaus Eifel-Ardennen-Region

10/31/26
2:00 PM

Seminar on bats in the Eifel National Park and in Vogelsang.

Now they are gradually retreating: the warm summer nights are over, the mating season is coming to an end, and the occupation of winter quarters has begun: at this time of year, the native bats elude our gaze.

Bats are masterpieces of evolution. They "see" with their ears and fly with their hands. Their ultrasonic echolocation makes them particularly fascinating to us, as humans do not possess such abilities and senses. Their agility in flight surpasses that of birds: "Chiroptera" is the order of mammals to which bats belong, which translates to "hand-wingers." This evolutionary development, being able to steer their flight maneuvers with particularly developed hands, makes them far superior to birds in terms of aerial acrobatics.

In the Eifel National Park with its extensive forests, natural flowing waters, open succession areas, and historic mining tunnels, bats find an ideal habitat. Together with the historically significant site of Vogelsang, this protected area forms a hotspot of biodiversity: of the 25 species living in Germany, 18 are found here.
