The Kamchatka Peninsula in Eastern Siberia is often referred to as the “Land of Volcanoes” or a “hellish paradise.” In her debut novel *Kurilensee*, Munich-based biologist Johanna Klink takes readers on a journey into this awe-inspiring wilderness of glaciers, geysers, and untouched nature, thereby sharpening their awareness of the threats facing the planet, the ambivalence of science, and the beauty of nature.

At the heart of the novel are the endangered salmon populations in the vast crater lake on the sparsely populated peninsula at the end of the world, and a team of researchers who must decide on the possible use of phosphate fertilizers in the lake. The main character, Anna, is part of this research team. For years, fewer and fewer salmon have been returning to the lake to spawn. The fishing industry is pushing for intensive phosphate fertilization to secure jobs in the coastal region. The researchers know that endorsing the fertilization carries high risks. The entire ecosystem of the region could be thrown out of balance. The team—Fjedor, Yulia, Vova, and Anna—must make a decision by the end of the summer.

Caught between economic interests, scientific analysis, and an emotional connection to the overwhelming beauty of unspoiled nature, Klink crafts a literary chamber drama that elevates the genre of nature writing to a remarkable level.
